Shop Small
I made this blog in the hopes that your holiday shopping is easier than our attempt at family photos. But in all seriousness, this is not your average holiday shopping guide. This blog not only contains over twenty small business for you to support this holiday season but you will have the pleasure of learning more about each of them along the way.
Companies like Amazon and Walmart have become even more dominate during the pandemic leaving small businesses struggling to survive. This is a fact that should be front of mind as people start to shop for the holidays, which is why I put together a list of local Midwest small businesses. This blog started as a short list and grew from there. Through this process, I connected with over forty different small businesses across the Midwest. The list of businesses may be extensive, but it is entirely worth the read because you are sure to find something special for everyone on your shopping list. You will see a common thread throughout all of the small businesses: they are all dedicated to making the world a better place. The businesses on this list are run by incredible individuals, have amazing origin stories, sell high quality (often handmade) products, and will make perfect gifts.
I am so happy to share an amazing assortment of small businesses with you!
Before “introducing” all the small businesses, I want to thank every one of them. They took time out of their busy holiday season to answer my questions and connect with me. Building connections with so many outstanding local businesses has provided me with so much joy over the past week while I have put this blog together.
I categorized the businesses by the products or services they provide and then by alphabetical order within their category.
The first category is ‘Pretty Things,’ which is all things craft related from ornaments, paintings, book shops, natural candles, personalized cards, woodwork, and so much more!
The second category is ‘New Year. New Goals’ and includes some of my personal favorite fitness boutiques, studios, and wellness advocates. They have done such an incredible job pivoting during 2020 to adapt and safely serve their community.
The third category is ‘Pampering’ and includes photographers, beauty specialists, body products, and a stunning vacation spot. This category is perfect for the person who has had a very stressful 2020 and deserves extra TLC (so everybody!). Give the gift of a relaxing experience.
The fourth category is ‘Lookin’ good & feelin’ great,’ which includes my favorite local apparel businesses ranging from sporty clothes that you can rock during a workout to fashionable pieces to spice up and add color to your wardrobe.
The fifth category is ‘Let’s get cookin’ which includes food-related businesses.
The sixth category is ‘Nonprofit Support’ and directs you to an extensive list of nonprofits.
The seventh category is ‘Nerdy Schitt’ and is exactly what it sounds like it would be.
I am so thrilled to share this blog because there is something for every person you are shopping for whether that’s art, clothing, fitness, home essentials, and so much more. Plus, you may even get some ideas to add to your holiday wish list as well.
Remember, there are other ways you can support small businesses.
You can hype their social media by sharing and commenting on their posts. (I have included the Instagram handles to each of the small businesses.)
Wear or use their products and talk about them with your friends, family, and loved ones.
Bring them a coffee or holiday treat.
Use their products as gifts (or gift cards!) for holidays and birthdays.
Give them grace and patience. Small businesses are usually small operations run by one or two people.
Celebrate their wins, big and small!
Please note: First, I have shopped at most of these small businesses, which is why I recommend their product/service. However, I have not been given any discounts for featuring these businesses, and there are no incentives for me besides highlighting incredible businesses that I love! Second, I reached out to all of the companies that are included in this blog; the businesses with a (**) responded to my inquiry to feature them. Third, each picture links to the small business's website. I found a majority of the photos that are used on each of the small businesses' Facebook pages.

8th Ave Market**
Creative founder, Tara, started 8th Ave Market in the corner of her basement with the goal to bring happiness to others. What began with one little ornament that depicted the Twin Cities with a heart over it has expanded. 8th Ave Market has flourished into a full-fledged business offering handmade decorations located in her home studio in Delano, Minnesota, where her boyfriend also contributes to 8th Ave Market’s product collection. Owning her small business has given Tara independence, but she has never lost her mission of bringing people a sense of joy and a feeling of home no matter how far from “home” they may be. A few fun facts about Tara are that she loves horses, takes lessons in Dressage, and has a long-haired chihuahua named Cujo. For the Minnesota lover in your life, 8th Ave Market has your holiday shopping covered.
If you are located near Maple Grove, she will have a pop-up sale at the Fox Run store on November 27th & 28th and December 4th & 5th.

Becca Peick Art**
An undergraduate classmate of mine, Becca Peick, is an LGBT watercolor artist! She has always been creative, whether that was in our Leadership class together or in other facets of her life, but she fell in love with watercolor painting about a decade ago. At the start of COVID19, she was laid off, which prompted her to start her own shop. Painting helps to ease some of the anxiety that she has been feeling during such uncertain times. Her goal for her business is to help others feel less stress by surrounding themselves with art. A fun fact about Becca is that she has a tattoo of pine trees, which is one of her favorite items to paint. Choose one of Becca’s pieces as a gift to bring peace to a loved one’s life.

Craftigail**
Former cross country competitor of mine, Abigail, started Craftigail a little over a year ago. She has always but struggled to commit to any particular craft to excel at it. Creating Craftigail served to hold her accountable for continuously working at her crafting skills and provides an additional income. At the beginning of her business, she started with tassel earrings but has grown from there, dabbling in various other mediums and crafts. Originally from Albany, Minnesota, she now lives in Duluth, Minnesota, with her cat and partner. She draws her inspiration from and even incorporates beach glass and birch bark into many of her designs. When I asked her if I could feature Craftigail in this blog, a line that stood out to me is that she “let’s curiosity lead the way,” which is shown throughout all of her beautiful pieces. Her favorite aspect of Craftigail is the online community that it’s created. She uses her platform to highlight other artists, makers, and small businesses and raise awareness and funds for issues that she is passionate about. When she’s not crafting or working her full-time job as a marketing manager for a local nonprofit, you can find her reading, writing, cooking, hiking, and exploring all the beauty that northern Minnesota has to discover. Abigail has a large inventory of handcrafted accessories that would make amazing stocking stuffers.

Em’s Woodwork**
Em’s Woodwork quite literally can be described as a phoenix. Her business was born when she and her husband (my cousin) had to remodel following a major house fire. From that experience, she realized her love for woodworking. Emily started creating for her own family and has expanded from there, creating stunning family heirlooms that families can pass on from generation to generation. What began as a remodeling project and flourished into creating pieces for people all across the world. Any piece from Em’s Woodwork would make for beautiful, heirloom gifts.

Everthine Jewelry
Aisha Formanski, founder and artist, creates each of her beautiful handmade items at their studio in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. The jewelry isn’t just handmade and beautiful, but also incorporates a secret message hand-stamped into each piece. The messages themselves set these jewelry pieces apart, incorporating natural stones and surface design. These pieces are heirloom-quality pieces and would make the ideal gift to pass down throughout generations. From sassy pieces to timeless heirlooms, you are sure to find something meaningful and beautiful for a loved one on your list.

Flame & Flora**
Founded in a love for community and creativity, business partners Abby and Moriah started Flame & Flora. Moriah is a proud “crazy plant lady,” and Abby has always loved candles, so she decided to make them herself. What started as a “what if?” born from sharing their skills with loved ones has flourished into a business that can provide all your plant and candle works needs. Not just that, the two women strive to create community through storytelling and encourage creativity. The two share a passion for people and their business, but almost nothing else - clearly, opposites do attract and create extraordinary businesses. A fun fact about these business partners is that between the two of them, they have five kids, one cat, one dog, and a gecko so every day is full of excitement. Gift your plant loving friend one of their beautiful pieces!

flora & phrase**
Zoë started her business two years ago when she was made personalized gifts for her grandparents. She wrote a poem for each of them on her great grandfather’s 1931 Remington Noiseless typewrite incorporated pressed flowers and mounted it on wood. And from there, her business grew and evolved into an Etsy shop in December of 2018. She is continuously striving to capture the power of words and their ability to make individuals laugh, remember, and preserve. For Zoë, flora & phrase intersections doing what she loves with her hands and her love for writing and poetry. She strives to incorporate people she’s in community with, including BIPOC and queer writers. Fox Run**
Tia started off as a maker and a creative herself. She built tables and lighting with her husband, Aaron. Together they sold antiques. It was at Tia’s first big market that she met her first vendor-partner, 8th Ave Market (another feature in this blog). Tia loved Tara’s products, and during a conversation, Tia said, “I don’t know where this is going, but I really want to sell with you and promote your product!” Jump forward three years, and Tia and Aaron have brought together twenty-five makers under one roof. Now, Tia spends less of her time making and more time strategically organizing makers and fostering a community of creative collaboration. Tia loves meeting people, helping small businesses grow, building makers' confidence, and bringing new small businesses to the community, and helping individuals discover her favorite local brands. A fun fact about Fox Run is that they are the first conglomerate, a local artisan company in Minnesota to have a retail storefront, a mobile boutique (the largest in the US!), a presence at the Minnesota State Fair, and curate their own markers along the way! If you want to shop locally, stop by Fox Run to shop from twenty-five different businesses all in one place!

Let It Be Yours Co**
Ashley, the founder and designer at Let It Be Yours Co, makes personalized mugs for every occasion. My personal favorites are her wedding mugs that are a perfect gift for anyone in the wedding party. Ashley started designing as a hobby when she went into preterm labor at 27 weeks and was on modified bed rest. She needed something to help pass the time and started designing coffee mugs. That baby turns FIVE on Wednesday and designing has been her full time job for three years now. She will personalize every design the way you would like it and is incredibly easy to work with. Shopping for Let It Be Yours Co offers a very personalized gift for your loved one.

Loon and Beau**
Your adorable pups deserve holiday gifts, and Loon and Beau have the perfect products for you. Loon and Beau when the owner, Danica Reitzner, was unable to foster dogs from the rescue that they volunteered at as often as they wanted to. She figured that there were other ways to help foster dogs, which is why she donates a portion of the proceeds to local rescues. Over the last few years, she has been able to donate over $1,000 to local rescues, and looks forward to donating even more in the upcoming year. What started as a hobby and a desire to give back has flourished into a large part of her personality. Just as Danica’s business has evolved, so has her personality. She feels more confident in her decision making and business instincts. Through this process, Danica has been able to connect with like-minded, strong, independent females (and males) that have supported her maker’s journey. Every piece of Loon and Beau’s puppy products are constructed in partnership with other small businesses. You can find Loon and Beau at Fox Run or order off the website to spoil your adorable pup!

LYW Candles**
If you have been to our house, you know I usually have a candle (or five burning). Similarly, Hannah, the founder of LYW Candles, also has an obsession with candles. A quote that stood out and made me chuckle because I so strongly relate was when Hannah said, “The amount of money I spent on candles on a given year is shameful, but the ambiance and smells always set my mood and helped balance my stress to relax and enjoy the ambiance.” She fully embodied a quarantine learner because it was during this time that she decided quarantine was the best time to learn a new skill: candle making. During her learning process, she realized that many candles aren’t made with elements that are healthy to burn. Because of this, it was her goal to learn how to make a CLEAN, burning candle. Hannah used her extensive marketing background to create her business from the ground up, building on her skills to draw up her dream of starting her own brand and story while allowing the quality, clean products to speak for themselves.
Additionally, she uses her platform and business to encourage others to pursue their business dreams, take the leap, and believe in their incredible abilities. She strives to spread a message of encouragement and love to others who might be pursuing a small business endeavor. Whether people connect with her message, she is happy that she delivers a cleaner, safer burning candle that still has a capturing ambiance and unique smells. Hannah hopes someday she can offer a scholarship to a young female pursuing their own small business that seeks to champion goodness, love, and light to others. Whether it’s providing an ambiance light in your home or a motivation light in your business journey, Hannah at LYW Candles is a great business to support for all your candle and ambiance needs. Purchase one (or multiple) clean burning candles from LYW Candles to give to your candle obsessed friend.

Northern Paperie**
Erin Tone is a Minnesota based watercolorist and illustrator who masterfully creates custom paintings and wedding suites. Motivated by the support and encouragement of some of her biggest cheerleaders and her love of painting and creating, she started Northern Paperie earlier this year. She loves being able to capture and encapsulates precious moments in time for her clients. As a proud Minnesotan, she has a soft spot for painting local Minnesota scenes and is inspired by people’s love for the state. Erin got married last year and lives in Minnesota with her husband and her golden retriever, Turk. Together, their family enjoys hiking the North Shore, brewery hopping (pre-pandemic, of course!), and doing house projects. If Erin wasn’t already cool enough, she has climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and is working on painting the summit right now!! I am astonished by the detail incorporated into each piece of art and even more amazed by the love she puts into each piece. Any piece from Northern Paperie would make a fantastic gift for anyone on your list, from the newly engaged couple who wants a print of their engagement to the traveler who wants to preserve their favorite adventure in print.

RAE Handmade Co.**
Embracing the lockdown with a positive mindset, creative and business owner, Rachel, used the national lockdown to develop her creative outlet crafting little polymer earrings. Unsurprisingly (because these earrings are absolutely stunning), people were incredibly supportive of her endeavor. Not only are the earrings stunning accessories that add a pop of color to every outfit, but they are also affordable, aesthetically pleasing, and incredibly lightweight. Rachel enjoys creating each piece because of the variety of pairings between different shapes and colors. She has limitless possibilities and continues to push herself creatively. For the family member, loved one, or bestie, who loves to accessorize, RAE Handmade Co. is the perfect place to look.

Side Lake Stitch**
The creator behind Side Lake Stitch, Bess, has been sewing for about a decade to craft purposeful presents for loved ones. She started Side Lake Stitch to foster her creative outlet after quitting her job to spend more time with her children. Over the decade, her work has evolved from children’s clothing to quilts and quilted products. She finds inspiration from nature and the vivid colors that we can see all around us. A fun fact about Bess is that she has been to at least twenty different hot springs. Side Lake Stitch has everything you need, whether you are looking for a beautiful quilted product or an easy sewing tutorial to make your own gift.

The Girl’s Just Sayin’ **
Originally from California, owner of The Girl's Just Sayin' and professional doodler, Allegra Azzopardi has been braving the Minnesota winters for five years. Looking for something exciting to do outside of her 9 to 5 office job, she started her little endeavor of creating a small business. Allegra had tried numerous hobbies before, but nothing really carried through. It wasn’t until her friend suggested that Allegra sell the punny doodles that she had been posting on her personal Instagram page that a creative idea really stuck. I mean, what’s better than quotes, puns, and creative designs? Her designs range from hilarious birth announcements to cleverly written encouragement cards. There are some PG-13 rated cards, but if I’m honest, those are my favorite. Purchase one of Allegra’s cards, mugs, or ornaments as a perfect stocking stuffing and enjoy her oodles of doodles.

New Year. New Goals.
With the new year, people often time set fitness goals. The organizations I included below will make it their number one priority to support you and push you towards achieving your health and wellness goals. In general, when it comes to fitness, if you can financially manage it, avoid canceling your membership at the gym or studio you attend. Most of these places are hanging on by a thread. This portion is incredibly close to my heart. 2020 has been an incredibly challenging year for me mentally. Having incredible organizations grounded in community and whole-body wellness to turn to have been incredibly grounded and have provided me with communication. By gifting a membership for a loved one, you are not only supporting a small business, but you are giving them ownership in their health and a strong, supportive community to help them navigate a challenging time.
Alchemy
To say I am Alchemy’s biggest fangirl is the understatement of the year. I have been obsessed with Alchemy since a dear friend of mine introduced me to it. Even though I have only attended one class in person, I have always felt a strong sense of community. After running for over a decade and falling in love with yoga, Alchemy offered the perfect blend of yoga and HIIT. The variety of workouts, inspiring coaches, and inclusive community are all aspects that Alchemy possesses and are admirable qualities for a gym. What Alchemy does exceedingly well is their fight for social justice. They created a Diversity, Equality, and Inclusiveness Committee to drive forward change within the community. At the start of the year, Alchemy created a platform called Alchemy Anywhere that houses hundreds of recorded workouts and offers daily live workouts, allowing athletes to work out from the comfort and safety of their homes. Gift your loved one with a membership to a gym that is sure to kick their booty while also supports inclusivity and fosters a community of empowering all bodies.

Carpe Diem Yoga Studio**
Founded by the most dynamic duo and power couple, Anna and Neil Hultgren, Carpe Diem Yoga Studio was launched earlier this year to create a community of individuals who want to seize the day! With a variety of classes, from an intense HIIT class to a live music vinyasa flow to a starry night yin class, Carpe Diem Yoga Studio offers a range of classes to meet you where you are in your wellness journey. I have been amazed to watch them pivot during the second shutdown in Minnesota to shift all classes to a high-quality streaming option. Anna and Neil dual teaching a free Yoga Flow and Body HIIT class on Thanksgiving so you and your loved ones can meaningfully move your body before moving forward with your day. Whether it’s on Thanksgiving or later this week, you simply must check out one of their classes.

Northstar Hemp - Carpe Diem Health and Wellness**
NorthStar Hemp was founded in 2019 by two lifelong friends, Ben and Neil, who intend to bring health & wellness to their community.
Ben spent 5 successful years working in the corporate sports field until, in 2018, his wife was diagnosed with 2 challenging, auto-immune diseases. After a difficult and time-consuming search, he discovered that Cannabidiol (CBD) was to be a great source of improvement for his wife’s health. In fact, after his family’s successful CBD experience, Ben decided to devote his career to bringing the remarkable benefits of CBD to others.
Neil maintains a passion for the field of personal wellness. His lifelong studies are in the area of health & wellness, clinical research. While studying Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota he started a business focused on bringing fresh, year-round strawberries to Minnesota. For the next two years, he studied agronomy and lived - worked on a strawberry farm in London. While there he discovered his true love for the farming experience. While working towards his yoga teacher certification, Neil and his wife Anna who is a fitness Instructor, began to use CBD as a most effective tool for recovering from workouts and for helping with their sleep. Developing and growing CBD products that benefit the health & wellness of his community has proven an ideal opportunity for Neil.
I have loved using their Roll On CBD Muscle Gel to help relieve muscle aches and help with recovery. Products from Northstar Hemp are perfect for the person on your list who loves holistic wellness.

Prairie Soul Yoga and Fitness
After leaving the track field in college, I floundered, trying to recover my health and find balance, not punishment in exercise. Founded by owner, Megan Nelson, Prairie Soul was a place of solace for me. Prairie Soul sparked my love for yoga, provided me with a much-needed community, and loved me throughout the highs and lows of life. Whether you’re in Brookings or anywhere in the nation, Prairie Soul can provide you with this same support. Like many other businesses, Prairie Soul has quickly pivoted to an online streaming option while prioritizing their members' health and safety, which means you (or the person you would like to gift a membership to) can enjoy the wide range of classes from anywhere. Sophie Anne Fitness**
As a retired athlete, perfectionist, and someone who has dealt with disordered eating, founder Sophia Anne, strives to support, encourage, and ease the process of becoming a healthier version of yourself. Sophie enjoys helping women overcome similar challenges that she faced. A quote from Sophie that resonates with me is, “When my client realizes that she can eat a cookie and live her life the fullest while STILL hitting goals, is by far the most rewarding.” Sophie offers one-on-one coaching and just released an action-packed 4-week program called the Glow Up Guide which includes information about nutrition and home workouts. Pampering
Have you heard the word ‘unprecedented’ enough to describe this year yet? Well, take care of yourself or your loved one by giving them a chance to relax and shake off some of the stress that’s accumulated.
Custom Nails By Jeanette**
Founder and artist, Jeanette, offers a unique way to pamper yourself at home. When she was younger, she loved art and coloring but failed art class because she kept getting stuck on the tiny details and couldn’t finish a large painting. A substitute teacher noticed her struggling and gave her a tiny paintbrush and prompted Jeanette to paint on her nails, which she did. And she hasn’t stopped painting on her nails since! She has been mixing nail polishes and creating creatives designs since middle school when her mother gave her a Caboodle containing colors and glitters. Moving from middle school painting, Jeanette now channels her creativity by painting intricate press-on nails with gel for her clients. During this season of gratitude, Jeanette is grateful for the people who invested in her as a child by encouraging her creativity and the people now who continue to support her small business. Rather than gifting a trip to the nail salon, personalize a set of press-on nails for your loved one or purchase a gift card so they can design their own new set of claws.

Emily Paulson Photography
After finding Emily on Instagram a few years ago, I was entranced by her unique ability to capture beautiful moments in time. The joy she has for her profession is shown through every image she captures. I have loved watching her evolve and flourish as a professional throughout the years. Gifting a photo session for someone on your list can be such a meaningful gift. This is an incredible gift for couples who have had to postpone their wedding plans because of the pandemic and are suspended mid-engagement facing uncertainty ahead to re-spark their excitement even during the unknown. Visit her website to request a session with her or discuss gifting a photoshoot to someone in your life.

Grey Duck Cabin
Grey Duck Cabin is another one of my Instagram obsessions. After years of camping along the North Shore, Steve and Charlena decided it was time to upgrade the tent for a more permanent dwelling that they could call their own. Knowing they would only be able to enjoy the cabin for a few weekends a month, they knew they wanted to share their cabin with others so they could enjoy the beautiful North Shore. Even though it’s been a rollercoaster and a full time job, the kind words from their amazing guests have made everything worth it. What is so special about the Grey Duck Cabin is the remoteness and solitude while still offering modern amenities. Build on forty private acress surrounded by a Minnesota state park, the cabin offers guest peace, serenity, and quiet. A fun fact about Grey Duck Cabin is that the original design started off as a tiny home, just around five hundred square feet, but wanting to host more people, the cabin doubled in size. We all need a vacation right now and the Grey Duck Cabin is the perfect answer to that. Give the gift of a relaxing and peaceful vacation while also adhereing to safety measures during the pandemic.

Kayla Otoo Photography
This summer I had the absolute pleasure of working with my dear friend, Kayla, during a boudoir session. As someone who struggles with disordered eating, photographs of myself are one of my least favorite things. Kayla not only made me feel like a goddess, but also made me feel comfortable and confident. I was blown away by how outstanding the photographs turned out and it’s all because of Kayla’s incredible abilities. Give the gift of confidence this holiday season by gifting someone on your list a photoshoot with Kayla whether that’s a boudoir shoot, headshots, senior photos, or a couples photo session.

Mad Loves Hair**
Madelyn started ‘Mad Loves Hair’ because she felt she was losing her spark and wanted to take back her career, love for doing hair, and her connection with people. She rekindled her spark and passion for hair when she found Meraki, the studio and stylist community she is now apart of. She always knew she would end up in the beauty industry because she enjoyed washing her barbies’ hair more than playing with them. She looks forward to filling her chair with people that she can learn from and them from her. Her chair is a safe space for any person to come, sit, and be heard and respected. Go visit her and sit in her chair or gift this incredible experience to someone else.

The Glow Lounge**
As a redhead, Mollie Michura, tried to fight her genetic for years in her attempts to get tan. But unfortunately, all she did was damage her skin and put herself at risk for developing skin cancer. When tanning didn’t work, she tried all the lotions and tanning sprays but was always unhappy with the uneven coloration. She has reasonable expectations for tanning, wanting just a hint of a tan, a glow, you could say. In 2008, Mollie tried getting a custom spray tans and was thrilled with the results and wanted everyone to feel as amazing as she did. Sharing that feeling with others became Mollie’s why and motivation. The Glow Lounge has grown out of Mollie’s ‘why; to become a safe space for people of all ages, skin tones, and body types to feel comfortable and amazing in their own skin. The Glow Lounge offers an incredibly customizable experience for every client. The team at The Glow Lounge prioritize the customer experience as much as the tan itself. A custom color formula is carefully curated for each client and is applied with an organic solution with warm air, so it’s comfortable during application. The Glow Lounge was the very first spray tan specific salon in Minnesota. I can personally attest that the tan and the customer service is outstanding. The Glow Lounge is celebrating its 9 year birthday during November, and they are offering amazing deals to celebrate, including new clients, get 50% off their first tan! Minnesota winters can get long, so pamper yourself or someone else with this incredible experience.

Cinnamon Lifestyle**
Cinnamon Lifestyle is the new kid on the block in St. Cloud. Founded by Paige and Keyanna, it is a trendy, fashion-forward boutique. The two of them knew that they wanted to be their own bosses. Keyanna was excited to get her business idea going but wanted a partner who offered a different perspective and style to join her but shared her same love for fashion, and Paige was the first person who came to mind. The two of them enjoy running their own small business because it’s a product of passions, incorporates all the things they love, and they love to inspire and encourage other women to fulfill their own dreams and look fabulous while doing it! This is a perfect small business to give to the fashionista on your list.

Fierce and Flawed**
Fierce and Flawed opened this year and is a black-owned business founded by blogger and “mompreneur” (love it!), Sabrina Adams. She has always had an entrepreneurial spirit, and fashion brings her joy and peace. When she was a young girl, she enjoyed styling her barbies and playing dress-up. Over the years, she has worked at numerous boutiques, gaining knowledge about retail and small business operations. After recovering from COVID19 in July, which was scary, Sabrina knew there was no time like the present to follow her passions. Fierce and Flawed brand focus is to encourage women to embrace their essence. This mission is inspired by the words of Rachel Zoe, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” Sabrina hopes to instill confidence and comfort in each of her customers. One fun fact about Sabrina is that she would like to start her own nonprofit one day. Support an amazing business and take your loved one’s fashion to the next level with a piece from Fierce and Flawed.

Fitzharris**
Fitzharris is an outdoor and sporting goods company that is an action sport store located in Downtown St. Cloud. It started as a family owned business that started in 1952 that has full service for skis, snowboards, bikes, and more. The employees at Fitzharris love sports and love the communities that surround action sports. Their goal is to make sure people are educated and prepared for the outdoors. Even though Fitzharris isn’t owned by a Fitzharris family member, it still feels like family. This is an amazing business to shop at for the outdoorsy person on your list whether they’re into backpacking, cross country skiing, snowboarding, or any other outdoor sport. Even if you’re not entirely sold on winter sports, check out Fitzharris for some new Minnesota weather gear and stay warm during the winter season ahead. I have shopped at Fitzharris for almost a decade now for all my Nordic and Downhill skiing needs and have not only loved the products I’ve purchased, but also, the service that’s been provided.

Hers and Mine Boutique**
Minnesota friends, Kailey and Laura, started Hers and Mine Boutique last November to pursue their shared passion for clothing and fashion. They love helping others find outfits that they are confident in at affordable prices. Shopping online isn’t always as exciting as shopping in person, but Hers and Mine Boutique make finding something online easy and enjoyable. Kailey and Laura have enjoyed growing their business and expanding nationwide. They have very different styles, which makes them a perfect pair for handpicking a wide variety of Hers and Mine inventory styles. The boutique’s name came from Kailey and Laura's differing styles blended into one store. There is a gift for everyone on your holiday shopping list, from autumnal sweaters to hilarious graphic t-shirts to velvet jumpsuits.

Nickichicki**
As we transition into the cold months of winter, a bright, cozy knit sweater is exactly what we need on our holiday list. Nickichicki was founded by Nicolle Brown, driven by her love for fashion and passion for crafting. The knitwear at Nickichicki is stand out because of the unique color combinations, use of oversized pom-poms, and the incorporation of heart. Located in the Midwest, Nicole and her female knitting team put immense love and care into each piece of knitwear. It is because of this dedication to love that Nickichicki’s slogan ‘Hand Knit with Heart(s)’ originates. The slogan speaks to the incorporation of the hearts throughout each hand-knit piece and the amount of love that the team puts into the knitwear. Spread a little extra love to your friend by gifting them with a heart-filled Nickichicki product!

Smile Big Clothing**
Hoping to spread positivity and encourage others to always keep a positive mindset regardless of their circumstances, Chance Pronschinske started Smile Big Clothing. Chance and his brother and business partner Adam find joy in their business because it allows them to positively impact the lives of others. This isn’t just a cheesy statement for them; they fully live up to their company goals. During this holiday season, they have partnered with hospitals to provide holiday care packages. Additionally, Smile Big Clothing donates a t-shirt to a child at the Children’s Hospital for every order placed. A fun fact about Smile Big Clothing is that it is operated single-handedly by the two brothers, Chance, and Adam. They take immense pride in having a hand in every single order. By doing this, they can form relationships with each of their customers and provide customers with a sense of belonging and connection to the Smile Big Clothing brand, including every customer in the Smile Big Family. Spread happiness and positivity to every person on your shopping list while also supporting an incredible family-owned and operated business.

The Thrifted North**
Business owner, master thrifter, and artist, Jenna, has been thrifting her whole life. Over a year ago, she decided to scale her thrifting passion into a business to share sustainable fashion and clothing with others in a more accessible way. When the first lockdown began in March, Jenna started embroidering because she couldn’t thrift anymore. She loves the creativity behind it. Now that she can thrift again, she plans to combine her two passions and embroider thrifted pieces to add to her website. You can support sustainable and ethical fashion and a Minneapolis based small business by purchasing a gift from The Thrifted North.

Vital Apparel**
Fueled by personal experience, high school friends and founders, Hung Dao and Alex Kozub started Vital Apparel to raise awareness and help change the stigma around mental health. The two of them find joy in their mission because they are positively impacting lives. They love fitness because it has so many benefits for physical and mental health, and they champion that in their clothing lines. A percentage of all of their profits are donated to the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation to further mental health research. Vital Apparel has the fitness enthusiast on your shopping list covered, whether it's the softest women’s leggings (I can personally attest to this), men’s performance tanks, and supportive sports bras. You are not only purchasing high-quality fitness apparel, but you are advocating for mental health awareness as well.

Let’s get Cookin’
Like gyms and studios, restaurants are struggling during this time. By purchasing a gift card from your favorite restaurant and gifting it to a loved one, you are helping to keep a small business afloat. Look up your local restaurants and give your loved one the gift of a tasty meal.
The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co.**
While in Brookings, South Dakota, The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co. was my go-to place for all my kitchen, cooking, and baking needs. Founder and community organizer Kirsten Gjesdal strives to make the world a better place. Kirsten and her team work to have a real impact on improving the community and encourage local engagement. Kirsten loves food and enjoys meeting people with similar interests from different generations and backgrounds. During this season of gratitude, Kirsten is thankful for the flexibility that comes with owning her own business provides for her family. A few fun facts about The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co. are that the name comes from a children’s book, they believe their building is haunted by a loving but moody ghost named Helen (the murderino in me needs more information about this one), and during their remodel they pulled over 10,000 nails out of the floor by hand. By purchasing a gift card from The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co., your loved one can update their kitchen and think of you whenever they cook.

Nonprofit Support
Gizhaadan
‘Gitzhaadan’ means to guard or watch over in Ojibwe. At the invitation from the White Earth Tribal Historic Preservation Office and in collaboration with them, this nonprofit will be assisting with community needs and requests, including traditional food pathways and COVID19 relief. Contribute to their GoFundMe platform, where 100% of donations go to the White Earth Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO), the largest reservation in Minnesota. The White Earth Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) is the official tribal representative for historic and cultural preservation. This is an incredible “gift” to give to the person who has it all. Provide a donation in their name to a nonprofit that aligns with their values.

There are so many nonprofits that you can support, so check out Give MN, where you can choose from over 6,000 organizations to donate to in Minnesota.
Nerdy Schitt
Pun very much so intended. If you haven’t picked up yet, I am a bit of a nerd. These next companies aren’t all in Minnesota, but they are small businesses that I have shopped from to get my nerdy, Schitt’s Creek apparel.
Fandomonum Designs
In 2016 I purchased matching cuffs for Jake and myself that read ‘After all this time?’, ‘Always’ (if you know you know), and I have been obsessed with this small business since then. Sean and Wendy, the founders and designers, are two of the kindest vendors to work with and appeal to the fan-human in each of us, whether that’s a Harry Potter reference, Hamilton, Marvel, and so much more.

Roc the Crystal
My favorite wine glasses from Roc the Crystal include the phrases, ‘MMMM, Eat Glass’ and ‘What the actual f***.’ For the Schitt’s Creek lover in your life, this shop has the ultimate print lineup from wine glasses, to graphic t-shirts, to bags. However, this shop isn’t limited to just my nerdy obsessions. Check out Crystal’s designs to buy a personalized gift for your loved one.

Style Envy Co
Probably my most requested piece of fanwear is from Style Envy Co., which is a gray ‘Rose Apothecary’ sweatshirt that I wear *literally* four times a week. This store has all things fan art, from Grey's Anatomy sweatshirts to plant mom shirts to social justice shirts.

The Coolidge Creations
I purchased a Pride shirt from this small business with David Rose’s quote, “Into the wine not the label” on it. I love to dress this shirt up with a sports jacket or wear it around the house. Head over to The Collidge Creations Etsy page to find the perfect graphic t-shirt for anyone on your list.

If you have made it through this list - congratulations! Hopefully, you know a few more small businesses to check out while you are doing your holiday shopping. I wish health and happiness for you and your loved ones during this holiday season.
With Love,
Rachel Elizabeth
